the unpleasant stain

You'll have to explain
You'll have to explain the unpleasant stain.
Sing it again,
You'll have to explain
She has to explain the unpleasant stain.
You had a short pain
You made a mark in the dark all alone.
The doctor agreed
The doctor agreed "Smart girls never bleed".
You couldn't succeed
You're prepared to breed.
Yes indeed.

Baby, don't you panic when you're feeling organic, oh no.
You're a mechanism and I'm a mechanic, oh yeah.
Oh yes we are, we certainly are, oh yeah.

And when it's congealed
And when it's congealed estimate the yield.
Privacy squeals "See how much I could spare if I dared".

Even the loveliest faces
Leave inexplicable traces
In the unlikeliest places, oh yeah.
Oh yes they do, they certainly do, oh yeah.

'The Unpleasant Stain', Robyn's paean to menstruation, is possibly the oldest of his songs. Originally performed with the Beetles (see the Nigel Cross reprint), it was a staple of Maureen and the Meatpackers and Robyn Hitchcock's Worst Fears - tapes of both are in circulation, and it was to have been included on the Meatpackers album to be released in 1987. Robyn used to perform it live very occasionally, and may still do so (if you've heard it performed recently get in touch).

Positive Vibrations is a fanzine dedicated to news, discussion and whatnot regarding Robyn Hitchcock, The Soft Boys and Kimberley Rew published by Aidan Merrit.
